BOTHELL, N. J., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it has approved a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction for the first time in nearly 20 years. The drug, called sildenafil citrate, will be the first drug approved for erectile dysfunction under the Food and Drug Administration's "Viagra-like" treatment for the disorder.
"We believe that these are the most effective drugs for treating erectile dysfunction and that this will be a breakthrough in medicine," said Jim Sage, director of the agency's Office of the Commissioner, in a statement.
But with many drugs for ED, like Viagra, available only at a relatively low price point, and the drug has not been approved for sale in Canada for sale in the U. S., the agency said it will not provide the benefit of Viagra to people with ED.
"We're going to look into the data and determine whether it will be appropriate for this drug," said Sage.
Sage said the drug is only available in Canada and the U. S. for a maximum of six years, and he said the agency was not aware of any recent studies of Viagra or other ED drugs.
